We had so much fun at Nurse Appreciation Night 2023! This was Nurse.org’s FIRST year presenting the pregame ceremony and it turned out amazing!! Read on for the re-cap video and photos from the night.
Nurses Throw and Catch The First Pitch
Kelli Camp and Matt Dustin were nominated by their peers for their commitment to the nursing profession. Following an online vote, Kelli Camp was named as the nurse to throw the first pitch during Mariners Nurse Night pregame ceremony. Matt Dustin, was named the first runner-up and will catch the first pitch. Both nurses were honored on the field during the pregame ceremony!

Kelli Camp, First Pitch Winner
I am a devoted wife and mother of 2 (who will be attending the game with me) and a lifelong baseball fan, especially of the Mariners. I am working on my Doctor of Nursing Practice degree, active with my children’s PTA, and recently elected to the Othello District School Board. It is an absolute honor to represent all Certified Registered Nurse Anesthetists at Nurse’s night of Mariner baseball if I am chosen.
Kelli is a nurse anesthetist and provides anesthesia in rural Washington. Without her, mothers delivering babies would have to drive over an hour to the next hospital to have their babies. She also provides emergency care for the emergency room to stabilize patients during critical situations. She is a fierce advocate for nurses and meets with legislators to help them understand the issues most important to ensure healthcare for Washingtonians. She has also testified to House and Senate Healthcare committees. She is currently the Vice President of the Washington Association of Nurse Anesthetists and on behalf of this association we would love to honor all the hard work she does every day to take care of her community as an Advanced Practice Provider. She lives in rural western Washington and is driving all the way over to go to this game with her children.
Matt Dustin, First Runner-Up Catcher
Matt Dustin is a phenomenal role model RN of 12 years, in the Level II Trauma Neuro Unit of Tacoma General Hospital. He has been a charge Nurse for at least 4 years and recently attained his BSN. As a nursing student, he won the "Outstanding Student Nurse" Award and was the Vice President of the Student Nursing Organization.
He proudly served our country for 5 years in the US Army Military Police Corps. He was deployed overseas in Germany, Somalia, Panama, and Cuba twice before becoming a nurse.
Over the past year, he has diligently served as a Washing State Nurses Association (WSNA) representative for our hospital and region, demonstrating the ultimate advocacy voice needed to stand up for Registered Nurse working conditions, fair wages, and rights. In this role, countless hours of voluntary service were put in by Matt and the other WSNA representatives for contract negotiations. It was this selfless dedication to our staff that led to a fair, and mutual agreement that really protects and represents our nurses; -a crucial element of employee retainment and recruitment. Overall, this work has a global impact on nursing burnout, especially since the pandemic where staffing has become a challenge. We cannot thank Matt and the WSNA team enough!
In addition, Matt has put in community service, organizing two golf tournaments for our hospital staff to encourage team building and stress relief. He participated in the "Folds of Honor" golf tournament. He has volunteered as a server to raise funds for a charity called "The Valhalla Flag Project" which provides flags to honor veterans and their families when they pass in our hospital. Matt is always looking out for others. I believe his innate drive to serve, whether for his country or his fellow frontline nurse is a quality that cannot be recognized enough. Last but not least, Matt loves the Mariners! It would be a dream come true for him to throw out the ceremonial first pitch of this game and be honored for his lifelong service to our community and nation. Thank You for your consideration.
Nominees:
Morgan Davis
Morgan has been nominated several times this past year at Madigan Army Medical Center, as a Daisy Award nominee. She just lost her baby last September, at 38 weeks, and upon returning to work she dove right back into the swing of things, offering outstanding patient care.
One family has been with us for months, however, while critically ill, and on life support, Morgan went out of her way to get the patient's dog to come to the hospital to visit her owner. The dog is very precious to the patient as it was his late wife’s dog, who passed away a few years prior, at Madigan.
Another recent patient was critically ill, and needed life support, and Morgan spent enough time with the patient to develop a rapport which lead to a patient safety event. The patient and her children had been suffering domestic violence, Morgan took it upon herself to get all necessary personnel involved to ensure the patient and children were safe and would be provided with enough support to endure the next chapters in their life.
She has volunteered her time to work extra and support the hospital's needs for education and skills fairs, and is always willing to help out on other floors and in the emergency department, without complaint. She is absolutely amazing, and although she has gone through some heartbreaking life events, she solidly remains her patients’ best advocate!
Jason Nordquist
Jason was nominated over 20 times by his nursing colleagues, he sure is loved! Here are some of his nominations:
Jason is one of the best ER and Trauma nurses I know...he started from the ground up in the ER as a tech, working his way through nursing school while supporting his family. Always has the most caring demeanor and upbeat positive enthusiasm needed for ER work.
Jason Nordquist works at St Josephs in Tacoma in the ER for the last 10 years. He started off as a CNA and now he has been an RN the last couple of years. I always enjoyed working with Jason. He is a hard worker. I’m very proud of him for his accomplishments.
Jason Nordquist has been working in the Emergency Department at St. Joe's in Tacoma for over ten years now and that takes a special kind of person. He has been a nurse for two years but prior to that he was an E.R. Tech where he found inspiration and support from his co-workers to pursue nursing and he hasn't looked back since. He was halfway through his nursing program when the pandemic hit and instead of quitting he continued school and helping the community at his job during that uncertain time. Jason has never been a person that sticks only to the duties of being a nurse but goes out of his way to help all of his E.D. family. He is a kind, compassionate, and hard-working human that loves nursing ALMOST as much as he loves baseball. He has been a huge fan of the Mariners his entire life and it would be a lifetime achievement if he was on the field throwing/catching. Please consider him for that honor.
